Prison Bus Hardcore Mode: How to Unlock It and What Changes
Hardcore mode in Prison Bus unlocks after you win the game once. Here's what changes on a Hardcore run — harder enemies, no free revives — and the free exclusive Armoured Bus skin for winning it.
Beating Prison Bus once is the whole key: Hardcore mode unlocks for players who have won the game, so your first job is finishing a normal run alive. After that, a Hardcore run plays the same route with harder enemies and no free revives — and winning it pays out a free exclusive Armoured Bus skin.
Quick answer
Hardcore mode becomes available once you have won the game: finish a normal Prison Bus run by getting to the prison alive, and Hardcore is unlocked for you. A Hardcore run has harder enemies and no free revives, and winning Hardcore unlocks a free exclusive Armoured Bus skin.
- Requirement: have won the game
- Hardcore rules: harder enemies, no free revives
- Win reward: free exclusive Armoured Bus skin
- Added in Update 1 (November 2, 2026)

How to unlock Hardcore mode
The lock on Hardcore is a single condition: you have to have won the game. The update notes describe it as "available to players who have won the game", so until you've finished a run at least once, the mode stays out of reach no matter how much else you've done.
In practice that means one complete trip through the standard loop:
- Fix up the prison bus. The run opens with your bus in need of repairs, and getting it roadworthy is step one. The bus repair guide walks through that stage.
- Drive it to pick up prisoners. With the bus moving, you collect prisoners along the route — how to pick up prisoners covers the details.
- Survive the anomalies. The stretches between stops are where the game's creatures and anomalies come at you, and the anomalies guide explains what you'll meet.
- Get to the prison alive. Reaching the prison alive is the win itself — see how to win for the full picture of what counts.
Cross that finish line once and Hardcore is unlocked for you. It was added in Update 1 on November 2, 2026, so it's part of the current game rather than something you need to wait for.
What makes a Hardcore run different
Hardcore keeps the same core loop — fix the bus, pick up prisoners, survive anomalies, reach the prison alive — and changes the terms you play it on. There are two differences, and they compound:
Comparison
| Aspect | Normal run | Hardcore mode |
|---|---|---|
| Who can play it | Every player | Only players who have won the game |
| Enemies | Standard difficulty | Harder |
| Free revives | Available | None |
Harder enemies. The enemies on the route are harder than in a normal game. Your objective doesn't change — the prisoners still need collecting and the prison is still the finish line — but the threats between them are harder to deal with, and the update art is blunt about what's waiting at the bus door.
No free revives. In a normal run, a free revive sits in reserve as the safety net when things go wrong. Hardcore strips that out — the free revive you'd fall back on simply isn't there. If revives have quietly been carrying your runs, how to revive explains the free revive you'll be going without.
Put together, the two changes turn the same delivery route into a run with a much thinner margin for error: enemies that punish mistakes harder, and no free way back from going down.
The reward: a free exclusive Armoured Bus skin
Winning Hardcore has a concrete payout. The update notes list a free exclusive bus skin for winning, and identify it as the new Armoured Bus skin for Hardcore winners. Beat Hardcore once and the skin is yours for free — it's tied to the win.
If you're weighing whether the attempt is worth it, that exclusive is the prize on offer. You can read more on the Armoured Bus skin page, or browse the buses and skins overview to compare it with everything else in the game.
Getting ready for the attempt
The update notes list only harder enemies and no free revives as Hardcore's changes — so preparing for it is mostly about the systems you already know. If you're still chasing your first win, the beginner guide and the survival guide cover the run you need to finish first. And when you want to see how Hardcore sits alongside the other ways to play, the game modes overview has the full set.
